history
MK Bay Marina is located in Haisla First Nation Traditional Territory at the head of Douglas Channel near the community of Kitimat. The Haisla call the bay (translated)"resting place for fish before the spawn".
During the early 1950's, the bay was used by the large construction firm of Morrison Knudsen as a work camp while building the Kitimat Alcan smelter, and, the Kemano power project. As a result, the area became known as the MK site (Morrison Knudsen abbreviated).
During the 1960's and 70's, the bay was mainly used for log barge loading and a booming ground for the Kitimat Valley logging operation.
It was soon discovered that the bay was not a good natural anchorage. Deep water, underlain by steeply sloped, unstable marine clays, and, exposure to strong winds and high waves from the northwest and south, posed difficult challenges for developers.
After much engineering consultation, the 100-berth MK Bay Marina was built in 1976. It was a partnership between the Regional District, Crown Zellerbach, Eurocan Pulp & Paper, and Alcan Aluminum.
The marina served the basic needs of the community until 1988, by which time it was once again in need of an extensive upgrade.
This time, the Regional District obtained almost $2 million in funding from the Federal and Provincial governments to create a 140 berth marina. The majority of the work was dredging over 100,000m³ of material to create a protected shallow basin.
Dredged land was used to help the Haisla reclaim adjacent Kitimaat Village lands lost to erosion, build the marina parking lot, boat storage, and a campground.
A new concrete floating breakwater, and a new float system, were set on piles and completed in 1991. Also, a Managers residence was added in 1992.
Recently, in 2004 and 2005, major improvements in the fuel systems were made. In the summer of 2005 the new MK Bay Marina store was completed with a million dollar view of the bay, a supply store, boat detailing services, a lounge, and a deli.
The Regional District and the Haisla continue to explore opportunities for the marina. The objective is to be financially self-sufficient, and, develop lands sustainably.
